Glass is a basic material used in the manufacture of shower screens. Australian made glass shower screens abide by strict laws around the characteristics and attributes of the glass and Tempered or Laminated glass are normally used. Toughened or tempered glass is a type of glass that has been treated with thermal or chemical to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the inner surfaces into tension. Toughness is created through a high temperature heating process, then allowed to cool. Should a tempered glass ever breaks, it will shatter into rounded harmless pieces instead of jagged shards that regular glass creates, thus, reducing the risk of injury. Tempered glass of 8mm or 10mm thick is generally used for Frameless shower screens.
Laminated glass has a PVC film sandwiched in between two pieces of glass that holds together when shattered to prevent any breakage into large sharp pieces, is used more for fully framed shower screens which comes in 6mm thick.
